It is
unfortunate that Delhi is ranked fifth among all states of India
as per the e-Readiness Indices developed by the Department of
Information Technology of the Ministry of CIT, Government of
India. With its huge, educated population and compact size, Delhi
should have done much better than Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh,
Chandigarh and Haryana.
The actual e-Governance situation is, however, more depressing. A
cursory look at the web sites of the Delhi Government prove the
level of inefficiency and disregard to public service which lie at
the heart of the various governments. The sites are never updated
with the latest information. Nor do they have proper search
engines. There is no attempt to make them available in Hindi and
Punjabi, the other official languages of Delhi.
There
is a connection between expenditure on Information Technology, the
Social Accounting Matrix and Impact on Poverty. The common man
will be served much better if there is transparency and only
Information and Communication Technology can ensure it. Tax
collections in MCD and other departments will improve
exponentially. |
